On Tuesday, March 30th, New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo, said that he plans to sign the bill into law to allow the use of recreational cannabis. This decision comes after the State Assembly and the State Senate voted to approve the legislation.
The Senate Bill S854A passed through the Senate with 40 votes in favor of legalization, and 23 against it. Then it went to the Assembly, where it was approved with 100 votes in favor, and 49 votes against. These votes were decided in a session late at night. Governor Cuomo released a statement late Tuesday via Twitter, and said he would sign the bill when it reaches his desk.
Small amounts of cannabis would be legal to possess, and programs will be commenced that would help communities that were the most affected by the national and statewide drug wars. It would also allow cannabis sales to people over the age of 21 years old.
The bill goes to Governor Cuomo next, and he has ten days to sign it or veto it, when it reaches his desk. He said that he will sign it. He also stated that he looks forward to signing this legislation into law, and that the State of New York has a history of being the progressive capital of the country.
