Governor Phil Murphy has just announced that cannabis is legal in the state of New Jersey. With cannabis now legal there, people in municipalities in South Jersey are starting to look at how and where cannabis could best benefit their communities.

On Monday, February 22nd, Governor Murphy signed three bills into law. These would legalize the use and possession of cannabis by adults over the age of 21 years old. The sale and purchase of cannabis would also now be legal. These new laws would allow towns 180 days to forbid the sale or growth of cannabis for individual establishments.

These laws had much support. More than two thirds of New Jersey voters approved of the decriminalization and legalization of cannabis last November. A two percent municipal tax on cannabis sales could also serve as a needed revenue source after the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a town in Burlington County, 71 percent of voters approved of the legalization of cannabis. It contains retail centers and industrial office parks, which are located near major highways. Because of these desirable locations, there are many options for starting cannabis establishments. There would then be the opportunity to determine where these businesses could be located.
