OCD is a complex psychological condition. Patients have uncontrollable and recurring thoughts. These are the obsessive component, while acting them out, or the actions, are the compulsive part. The urge to repeat actions over and over is also a symptom of OCD. In the US, 2% to 3% of the population suffers from OCD, and the incidence rate is 4% in children. OCD is difficult to treat, and the most effective therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT. This treatment modality is combined with anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications. The recovery rate is about 10%, for a total recovery from the condition, and about half improve with treatment. The ECS that we talk about on this website has been increasingly shown to play a role in fear, anxiety and repetitive behaviors. The ECS regulates the neurotransmitters in the brain, which carry chemical messages between the nerve cells and other cells. It affects almost all of the psychological and physical functions in the body.

The research from the study that uncovered this data has suggested that cannabinoids could play a role in treating OCD and related disorders. There is a connection between the ECS and OCD, which has been manifested in both human and animal studies. The study showed promising results, as shown by the participants who told anecdotes of cannabinoids relieving their OCD symptoms and improving their anxiety. In a pivotal study of 16 severely OCD patients, those who received therapy and the synthetic form of THC, Nabilone, had double the symptom reduction after 4 weeks, than those who underwent either the cognitive therapy or therapy with Nabilone, by itself. The lead doctor explained that Nabilone works in a similar manner to that of THC. The doctor also emphasized that current medications are often ineffective, so there is a need for new treatment options. Since OCD has common characteristics with other conditions, there will be further study of the ECS for all of these related disorders.
