CBD and THC interact with our bodies in different ways. One of the main ways is by mimicking and building upon on the effects of compounds in our bodies. These are called endogenous cannabinoids, and they are named this because of their similarity to compounds in the cannabis plant. These endocannabinoids make up the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. As we talk about on here, discovery and learning about the ECS has enhanced our understanding of disease and health. This system also has a great influence for many areas of medical science, and it helps to explain how CBD and THC are useful compounds, and why cannabis is a widely consumed plant.
The ECS plays a significant role in the regulation of a lot of physiological processes that affect our every day life. These include: mood, energy level, blood pressure, immune activity, glucose levels, bone density and how we process pain, hunger and stress. If this system doesn\’t function properly, it becomes disregulated, and is either deficient or overactive. This is when disease occurs, and modulating the ECS may have a therapeutic effect on a lot of diseases. CBD and THC can slow, or stop, in some cases, the progression of disease.
When the first cannabis drug in 80 years was approved, it ended an era of cannabis being looked upon unfavorably. This drug is Epidiolex, for the treatment of rare and severe pediatric forms of epilepsy. It was declassified from a Schedule 1 drug, in September 2018, and became a Schedule V drug. This is the least dangerous or harmful class of the Controlled Substances Act. Epidiolex was then removed entirely from classification, but cannabis and CBD with more than 0.3% THC, remained as narcotics. Epidiolex is very expensive, at 80,000 dollars per year, and is out of financial reach to many Americans, especially for those without health insurance.
For those who can\’t access CBD like this, there are many alternatives, such as storefronts, coffee shops, markets, health clubs, upscale boutiques and even gas stations that sell hemp derived CBD oil. This includes pure CVD isolates that have a similar chemical structure to Epidiolex.
