Both political leaders and voters are noticing the benefits of legalizing cannabis. As more states revise laws for recreational cannabis, support for legalized cannabis is at an all-time high in its popularity. In the past four months, five states have legalized recreational cannabis, and this translates to the fact that 30% of the country allows adult residents to use and possess cannabis. At least two more states are slated to be added to the increasing list of states seeking to enact recreational cannabis legalization bills this year.

Experts in the field of cannabis policy say that this national trend indicates a shift in the perspective on cannabis by the American people. Arguments from voters and elected officials were based on perceptions of dangers of cannabis substance abuse. In addition, there were thoughts of a rise in criminal activities. These have subsided, as evidence indicates that there are social, economic and health benefits from a cannabis industry that is governed by the state. A law professor at Gonzaga, who is also a fellow at Harvard Law School, stated that these fears are turning out to be outdated, referring to past opposition to legalize cannabis. He and other experts predict that there will be stronger efforts in the near future to legalize it. Even still, there will be an uphill battle before the country will see a true national repeal of its cannabis laws.

As of April 7, 15 states have legalized both recreational and medical cannabis by way of voter ballots and state legislation. The state legislatures of Virginia and New Mexico have passed bills that would repeal the prohibition of cannabis. These states\’ bills are awaiting signatures by their governors.
