As of January 23, 2021, recreational cannabis is now legal in the state of Arizona. Dispensaries throughout the state are seeing lines of people who have waited for hours to obtain cannabis. Although it has just become legal, people cannot use it everywhere. There are rules in place for previous and for current cannabis users.

An example of this is that smoking either medicinal or recreational cannabis is not permitted in public places. Only adults over the age of 21 years are allowed to purchase cannabis from a licensed dispensary. Also, driving under the influence of cannabis is also illegal. Yet, the state of Arizona does permit medical cannabis patients to consume edible forms of cannabis in public, provided that they are not driving or operating a vehicle.

Driving under the influence of cannabis is considered a misdemeanor in Arizona. It can be punishable either by fines, probation, license suspension or jail time, depending on the situation of the incident and its effects and ramifications incurred while operating the motor vehicle while under the influence.

Some more points to note are that licensed places selling cannabis can sell up to one ounce of cannabis to recreational users. They can also sell 2.5 ounces of cannabis to medical consumers. Selling cannabis through delivery remains prohibited, until January 1, 2025.
