Cannabis use is continuing to increase, after the recent legalization of medical cannabis in certain states and countries. This increase also applies to the recreational use of cannabis. CBD has sparked increased attention for treating medical conditions since a lot of existing data suggest that it is well tolerated and safe, with few negative effects. The World Health Organization, WHO, also stated that in various controlled trials, CBD is well tolerated and also has a good safety profile. Several studies also found that CBD is non toxic and doesn\’t induce drastic changes in appetite, or affect certain bodily systems, such as physiological, psychomotor or psychological processes. CBD also does not cause catalepsy, which is characterized by involuntary muscle rigidity and a fixed posture, such as those presented by patients with certain conditions like catatonic schizophrenia. It is called waxy flexibility and occurs with no external stimuli, or causes, and the person who exhibits this condition also has a decreased sensitivity to pain. Overall, doses as high as 1,500 mg of CBD per day are well tolerated by the human body.

CBD has been found to be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms in patients with PTSD and anxiety disorders, as has been discussed in this forum. The first clinical tests that examined the effects of CBD on anxiety were conducted in the 1980s, and it was shown that CBD could relieve anxiety in volunteers, when combined with THC. These studies were also performed on volunteers with social anxiety disorder, or SAD, before speaking publicly. In both groups, healthy and with SAD, the subjects did better than the placebo group. The former two groups were given either a 400mg or a 600mg single dose of CBD, and each reported notably reduced anxiety symptoms, decreased cognitive impairment, such as remembering and organizing their material and also increased speech performance.

In addition to the anecdotal, or self reported experiences, neuroimaging studies showed that acute doses of CBD have modified blood flow to the areas of the brain associated with anxiety.
