The Farm Bill of 2018 does not fully legalize CBD, on every level or for every type. This means that the FDA has to decide how CBD products are regulated. The current status is that the lack of regulation means that the consumer must live by the notion of buyer beware.
It is up to consumers to make sure they are purchasing a CBD product that is safe and free from contaminants, as well as one that contains what the label states. A doctor advises that this is because the cannabis market is largely unregulated.
The buyer beware aspect applies, because even though the FDA is strict about CBD companies making unsubstantiated medical claims, they do not monitor and evaluate every CBD product. Some criteria should be considered in order to choose the best CBD oils for pain. Some of these characteristics include CBD that is extracted from a high tech method, known as super critical carbon dioxide, that does not leave residual, toxic solvents or ethanol. The CBD should also be free from pesticides, as well as metals, mold and other contaminants. The hemp should be grown in the US, be certified organic and be produced utilizing FDA Good Manufacturing methods. Finally, the CBD should be tested in a third party laboratory, using authentic Certificates of Analysis, COAs, which the laboratory should be able to prove.
