Cannabidiol, CBD, is the second most notable cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. It has seen a significant increase in the health and wellness market, and doesn\’t generally cause side effects or intoxication. Here is a review of some facts and misconceptions of CBD. There is still some confusion out there, which increases the need for further clarification.

To begin, CBD is legal in all 50 states, following the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. This means that CBD derived from industrial hemp, with a THC content of lower than 0.3%, is not a controlled substance. At the federal level, CBD derived from cannabis or hemp that contains more than 0.3% THC, is still illegal. But in states which allow medical use of cannabis in adults, CBD is also legal, depending on the state. Another fact about CBD which can be a little bit confusing is that it is non-intoxicating, but it is not completely without psychoactive effects. It does directly have an effect on the mental processes of cognition and mood. The most commonly recognized property of CBD is that it produces a calming feeling, but not an intoxicating or euphoric feeling, described as a high, as in that induced by THC. With THC, there is the possibility of leaving the user temporarily in an impaired state, mentally. Thirdly, reputable CBD companies adhere to strict labelling, but there are certain claims which suggest that it is all natural, pure or organic. In addition, hemp oil or hemp seed oil usually contain no CBD. The FDA is beginning to discern CBD oil label claims.

Lastly, there are certain facts that should be listed on all CBD oil labels. These include the amount of active CBD per serving, the fact panel, which should include the ingredients, the net weight, suggested use, the name of the distributor or manufacturer, and the distinction of the type, meaning full or broad spectrum, or isolate CBD. The bottle should also include a date code for the lab results, to prove that it was lab tested.
