The chemical structures of THC and CBD are different enough for THC to be classified as a psychotropic drug that is strictly regulated by federal authorities. In comparison, CBD is regarded as both safe and legal on a global level. THC, or delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most abundant compound in the cannabis plant. It is associated with producing a euphoric intoxication, while CBD does not produce a psychotropically altered mood. It was once believed that CBD was the precursor of THC, but both produce different effects.

As with most things, there is no black and white scenario for either the usage or properties of either THC or CBD. While CBD is often used because it does not produce a high feeling, THC is also believed to offer more than only the euphoria that it produces. An example of this concept is the property of both CBD and THC working together in the entourage effect. This is beneficial when each can bring out the greater benefit of the other. They work in tandem in this manner, and the THC complements the properties of the CBD.

THC was the first phytocannabinoid to be discovered, and it has been researched a lot more extensively than CBD. It has been found to be a moderately strong analgesic, or pain reliever. This quality makes THC valuable, since its properties have increased the use of cannabis overall, for medicinally legal conditions. It can be prescribed by a doctor, in legal amounts, and can help some people to have a better quality of life.
