Considering strain names of cannabis, as well as the classes of them, either Indica or Sativa, are crucial in order to determine which is the correct one for a given condition. For example, if a person was wondering which type of cannabis would be best for depression, there is no simple answer. But as with most cannabis questions, there are options and information to consider. There are cannabinoids and terpenes that offer hope and potential for therapeutic use in treating depression. Choosing and utilizing cannabis, strain names and Indica versus Sativa classifications, are complex matters.

For decades, cannabis pop culture used the terms of Indica and Sativa to describe the uses for many thousands of cannabis varieties globally available. Overall, Indica strains are thought as being mellower, with more sedative effects, while Sativa strains are more energizing and invigorating. Indica is a shorter plant, with bush like, wider leaves. Sativa is taller and less dense, with narrower leaves. The effects of each one are more influenced by the cannabinoids and terpenes contained in each, and research has not come up with a chemical distinction between the two classes.

There are three types of strains, or chemovars, which means chemical varieties, in botanical terms. Type 1 has high amounts of THC, and low levels of CBD. Type II is balanced at a 1:1 ratio of CBD and THC, and Type III has high amounts of CBD and low levels of THC. Type 1 is the most common type among all three. It tends to be preferred among recreational users of cannabis. In contrast, Types II and III are preferred by medical prescribers and patients who take cannabis for specific conditions. These latter two types are thought to help with the biphasic effects of the THC, meaning that low doses can help anxiety and depression, while high doses have the opposite, and unwanted effects, of causing greater anxiety and depression. Consuming Type II cannabis might help a user to experience less anxiety than by using the higher THC levels in Type I, but will still help the user to derive the therapeutic effect of the THC. For depression in particular, Type III can be beneficial, since there is evidence to support the potential of CBD to help depression.

The best terpenes for depression work with the other cannabinoids to produce the entourage effect, discussed on here frequently. These compounds help to bring out the benefits of CBD and THC. Examples of terpenes are: pinene, limonene, linalool and also beta- caryophyllene, or BCP. A study from 2015 showed that linalool and beta-pinene produce effects that mirror those of antidepressants. More recently, a 2019 study found that limonene helped mild and chronic, unpredictable stress. In this past year, a study showed that BCP might be an effective treatment for depression and also for stress related mental illnesses. Some of these include social anxiety disorder and specific phobias, as well as panic attacks.
